Rail Nation – the server update is live

The new update is finally finished and the first server is live!

 

All classic scenario servers will start with the new version that delivers smooth performance even in stressful situations like the end game or big events.

While implementing it we also added some exiting new features for you. These include new engines, background music, improved sound effects and a lot of usabilty improvements.

Performance

  • Newly-programmed Rail Nation framework for a better performance
    • Even on servers with many players
    • Even during the endgame and events

Controls / Convenience

  • Clothing items remain available after the end of the game round
  • A bar shows the account’s fill level
  • The current speed of the engine is displayed in the detail view
  • Messages: remaining characters displayed
  • Cities: a click on the stock of a city good opens up the ranking of its suppliers
  • Industries: a click on the goods opens the ranking of the busiest suppliers and collectors
  • City chat: notification of new posts
  • Scrolling in menus and overviews now smoother
  • City competitions: city rank displayed on the map
  • Conductor hints by William can now be browsed and disabled
  • Move to map position using keyboard: pressing CTRL + number key saves the current map position (e.g. a city or industry). Pressing the number key again brings you back to the saved position.
  • Increased controls of the friend list
  • Drop-down menus remain open for longer and are only closed after clicking
  • Welcome screen can be disabled

Schedules

  • In schedule mode you can browse the engines in order to find the one with the schedule you wish to change
  • All trains back to city (Plus Account)
  • More detailed information as to why a schedule cannot be adopted

Tutorial

  • Highlighting of buttons improved, task window no longer needs to be closed.
  • Image of William flashes as long as there are still unsolved tutorial tasks
  • Several tutorial steps simplified

Sound and music

  • Better-mixed sounds
  • Improved pan effects for flying objects
  • Volume reduction when inactive
  • Background music
  • Music adjusts according to player’s activity
  • Sound is muted if player switches to a different tab
  • Improved options for the settings for notifications, trains and background noises

Engine purchase screen

  • New layout for purchasing series
  • Era bar allows for finding the desired engine faster
  • Keyboard arrows can be used to browse the engine list
  • More visible arrows
  • Screen closes following purchase
  • Bonus engines can now also be viewed in the engine showroom (including their properties)
  • Revised engine models of the fifth era and bonus engines

Balancing

  • The level limit for cities is now set at 8 levels per era (so no complete goods substitution will take place any more)
  • Consumption now more closely related to player numbers
  • Processing industries can now be supplied right away and start with empty stocks
  • Investments in processing industries can be made right away
  • Associations: it’s only possible to join an association once every 24 hours
  • City competitions: during the first city level-up whilst taking part in a competition, the goods will remain unchanged
  • Endgame: new goods are only unlocked once all 12 current goods have been cleared
  • Endgame: cleared goods can still be transported to earn money
  • Endgame: prestige bonus for victorious home city (10,000 PP) or for connected winning megacity (5,000 PP)
  • Endgame: storage capacity in city increased

Lottery

  • More than ten new lottery prizes (e.g. boost vouchers, free tracks and cheaper or instant train station upgrades)
  • If multiple vouchers are available, their number will be displayed

    Why is it that you felt the importance of implementing this change? It totally destroy the opportunity of sharing workers.

    What is the toughs with this change? Will it take away the option of 1 h free haul with 0 wait time from the industries?

    You know very well that your PTR players have slaughtered this new way of playing EG. Why are you doing this?

    Would have been ok if one had the opportunity to select whether one wanted to use the vouchers or not. As it were on the PTR, it’s mostly a waste, and will for sure restrict my gold usage, not increase it.

  3. Fun game, but it seems impossible to ever catch up. I started a couple of games about a week ago. I have lost no chance of even being competitive in anything at this point. I may tag along with an active group, but I can never max things out enough in time.

    – Too little cash flow in most cases. It starts well at times, but then dries up.
    – Too few trains. The cost of adding new ones is high, in time and money.
    – Slow research. I am facing others who likely have lvl 25 research buildings and I only have lvl 8-12 ones. How can I ever hope to do well in any era with that?
    – Your starting city may be well away from a competitive one. What is the point of trying to level a city 5-10 levels behind the leader? Not much point there.

    You really need to have a way to add people in and still allow them to be helpful. To find my contribution to a city is in the range of 300T and the leaders are at 3000T or even 10x that makes me wonder why I waste my time.

    Leaders need to keep their leadership, but lacking a way to really catch up means I am not likely to do well.

    • @BradA: New games start every 13 weeks, so it’s pretty easy to join a game when it starts. For your first game, when you’ve come in during the middle of the game, you’re goal isn’t to be competitive so much as it is to learn the game. Yes, you’re going to spend a few weeks gathering money, building the engine shop, and buying new trains. Being around to watch the endgame and contribute where you can gives you valuable experience for when you play from the very start of the game.
